Hi everyone, my name is Alyssa, and I have just finished up my second year on campus. I am in Global Development Studies with a minor in French. I am really excited to be in this course as it is very different from what I have been studying, but I know how important it is to understand this subject in any work of field. I have worked with many large groups, managing groups and understand how important it is to have the right staff and the best way to make a positive environment for them to shine.
My dream job would be working for an NGO that is making a real change in the way that they approach global aid and partnerships with the countries that really need it or would be heading the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) division of a company and changing the way that their aid is given to countries. I want to change the way that CSR is viewed so that it is taken seriously and not just used as a PR stunt or make investors happy. In this dream position, I would want to make sure that all the staff are passionate about actually making a difference but come from all backgrounds so that everyone has something different to contribute. I want it to be a more modern environment where the open concept of having common space to brainstorm ideas and work more together as a team. I would want the space to be somewhere where I would want to come into work every day and be comfortable. Pay is important to live a comfortable life but what is more important to me is that I love what I do as long as I work. Flexibility would also be something that is included in my dream job, where I do have time to myself not to be all consumed by work. I would also be ideal to have it in a big city but near some green space where people could take breaks and get some fresh air. It would be quite challenging to have all of this, but that is why it is a dream right.

Hey Sarah, thanks for your reply! Honestly that’s a really good question, there are so many amazing NGO’s that are out there big and small. Obviously working for a branch of the UN would be amazing but I want to see what some of the smaller NGOs that have more of a direct impact would be a great experience as well.

Hey Alyssa, really great stuff and I am glad to hear someone really cares about providing global aid and working at the global perspective to make effective change! This is something I am also very passionate about doing and I really am glad to hear others like yourself are looking to do the same. I think you would make for a great head of a corporate social responsibility division as your passion will similarly shine onto those who you will look to employ. I can imagine that you follow a competency model like the one shown in class where you would act as a great leader and love building relationships with your employees who will also be like-minded. What kind of global inequities do you specifically have in mind that you want to improve? I’d love to hear more!

Hey Omar, thanks for your reply! Happy to see that you are also interested in providing aid in the right way. I definitely feel that part of giving aid is making relationships to understand what the country itself need and what my employers ideas are to help these countries. This way they feel comfortable in saying what is on their mind and we can be a productive unit. I am really passionate about advocating for children’s equality in educating them about what they can do with their future if they had the right resources but I also want to branch out and see what else is out there. What are you interested in?
